Starhawk among us

Image
Ladies and gentlemen, the Starhawk is out in the wild.  At least in the USA.  So I while I wait for mine to arrive from across the seas, I got a chance to play against one in St Louis. Chris was nice enough to play a game with me on a normal Wednesday 'Armada' night in St Louis.  There were 3 games going on simultaneously so it was a good night with some interesting games, Onagers seem to be everywhere.  Chris was trying something new with a new toy so it was fun to play against.   But without further ado the lists are below. The Fleets Again, I am taking my Garm Frigates out for another spin.  It's held up against squadron lists and an Onager so now lets try it against the second biggest, meanest ship in the game. Frigates!! All the small ships! My opponent brought a Starhawk with Raddus and a MC80 with a swarm of two dice bombers racked in their Rapid Launch Bays and ready to get bombing once they popped out of hyperspace.  I obviously can't kill Radd

Gameday in the Gateway to the Midwest

Well, I was heading to the St Louis area for work and much to my delight there appeared to be a thriving Armada community in the area.  Time to pack up the fleet, the bare minimum anyway, and fly it across the world to go play some games and make new friends. But with more February rain The Lists I brought my Garm Frigates lists.  Just getting more practice with it and seeing how it fairs against a variety of fleets.  Plus it's been a lot of fun lately. My opponent, Nathan, generously let me steal the second game of his day from Dakota.  All the Armada folks I have met so far have been great people and it's always a blast to just talk to them while we push our plastic space ships around.  Pew Pew noises mandatory! PEW PEW PEW   This would be my first time facing an Onager lit and after watching the two games unfold before me, I saw them peel apart a Starhawk and kill one another mercilessly.  Therefore, I wasn't quite sure how my VERY explode

Garm Frigates vs Swarm of Imps

The Underused Savior of the Rebellion The Fleets Yet again I am flying my Garm Frigates list.  Today I was trying it out vs another swarm of fighters.  This time from the Empire.  Below is the Garm Frigates list, based off of getting IF! to trigger on the hundred slashes approach to attacking ships. Garm Frigates My opponent brought his Thrawn two ship type fleet, but based on Ruthless strategists and TIE bombers vs a gob of Aces.  The plan is either to bomb you from the get go or or if you have squadrons they will die to a pile of TIE bombers and ruthless flak before those bombers go hopping towards your ships. Surprisingly Effective Setup He won the bid by a lot and chose to go first.  We again played Infested Fields, to see how it works yet again.  This time I put the obstacles closer to the middle but within range of me grabbing them in Round 1.  Squall went down and then I setup per my battle line plan while he dropped fighter after fighter.  Finall

A little Wave 8 Action

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and girls of ALL ages, it's finally here! The long-awaited, the much anticipated Wave 8 for Star Wars Armada! Onagers! Starhawks! Officer Wedge! What's not to love... so my usual partner and I started this momentous occasion off by proxying a few cards, as we both picked rebels and the Starhawk is a mysterious force out in Germany.  Also, this game is a couple weeks old as again life has been busy.  But there are more write-ups incoming from several more games I got in as I'm making up lost time. It's here!!!!! The Fleets I am running the list I just finished writing about a day or two ago.  Garm Frigates build on a Core of IF! and a Salvo Paragon.  Besides my imagination this would be the inaugural test.  Which could be scary since I spent some much time pondering how this works but what if it doesn't?  If you're a first time reader or just hate rifling through my currently semi-disorganized blog, I've included links sin

Fleshing out the "The Core"

Image
So I have the core of the fleet, but now what the do with the 202 points leftover.  How I do make a well rounded fleet that can handle a variety of threats?  The first threat the core is not very good at handling is a squadron fleet. 134 Points of Sloane ball would rip apart a Pelta and Paragon team.  I wanted to start off with a card I think is great in the competitive scene and that is Advanced Transponder Network (ATN).  I feel ATN works wonders in competitive fleets for one reason.  It allows me to bring a mix of Y-wings and/or VCXs and only take up a small portion of my fleet total.  I put Tycho, 4 Y-wings, and 1 VCX in a fleet with ATN.  That's 71 points in fighters and 5 points in cards.  Now before any bombing of my ships happen you have to mulch 32 points of hull and Tycho will be bouncing around to whoever needs to be tied down.  And if you didn't bring fighters, that's fine too! My Pelta and a transport can push the squadron ball alright and I will bomb yo

A Fleet for a New Age - Finding the core

Ladies and gentlemen, some world events and a busy holiday timeframe have prevented much in the way of Armada in my life over the past month or two.  But that has finally changed.  Schedules finally managed to sync up and I finally go to test my new Wave 8 fleet idea in a game.  But before we get to that, lets walk through how we got to where we are and how this fleet took it's formation. Thanks to Jacob and Phil, who were instrumental in walking me back from super crazy ideas but allowing the core concept of the fleet to stay intact and move forward to a *hopefully* competitive but unique fleet. The Core Idea No unobtanium in this build.... While the new Starhawk and Onager are certainly exciting and the new shiny hotness, I was interested in a ship that really hasn't seen much play lately...or ever.  It usually seems overcosted, but I think a couple of things coming together in Wave 8 can make it a dangerous cog in a formidable wheel of shooting.
